Taking schools to the next level

September 12, 2013

On August 28 – the third day of this school year – more than 50 people gathered to celebrate $1.6 million in physical upgrades that were made at two of GHCC’s partner schools: Margaret Brent Elementary/Middle and The Barclay School in Charles Village.

GHCC staff worked with both schools to coordinate this project in partnership with the Johns Hopkins University, who donated half the funds for the renovations. Baltimore City Schools matched the University’s donation, allowing these schools to replace badly worn restrooms; create bright new cafeterias with new windows to admit natural light; and beautiful, welcoming entryways. As longtime partners and supporters of public schools, GHCC played a key role by working closely with JHU and City Schools to develop the scope of this project as part of the Homewood Community Partners Initiative (HCPI). This year we are working with Hopkins to develop new programs and partnerships at the schools with the goal of taking these schools to the next level of excellence.

The best part for us? Opening thank you cards from the children and teachers who LOVE their school upgrades!
