Building and Strengthening Neighborhoods and People

The 29th Street Community Center

The 29th Street Community Center is a story of hope and renewal.

In 2011, what was then the Barclay Recreation Center at 300 E. 29th St., next door to the Barclay School, was closed by the Baltimore Department of Recreation and Parks. After years of underuse, what had once been a thriving community space was little more than a dilapidated building.

With the steadfast support of community residents and other stakeholders, Strong City Baltimore proposed restoring and reopening the center. The city agreed and gave us the keys. In 2013, the fully renovated building reopened as the 29th Street Community Center. The facility, once again brimming with life, is a safe and vibrant space that offers high-quality, low-cost daily programming – 70 percent of it community-led – to more than 450 adults and children every week.

This year the Center’s programming ranges from a sing-along playgroup to a robotics club for teens to yoga classes for adults. Our 2015 Summer Camps included Peace Camp, Super Kids Camp, and  Bulldog Basketball School. The Center also hosted 14 youth workers who assisted with community-based projects such as the cleaning and restoration of a local park, house painting, and assisting the community association, as well as center-based projects like supporting our summer camps and helping to organize the space.
