After being closed for nearly 25 years, the historic Chesapeake restaurant was purchased by new owners in 2010 and re-opened in June 2013. The Chesapeake generously provided lunch for GHCC’s 7th Annual Neighborhood Institute. Their delectable menu of oven roasted chicken, vegan veggie roast, fresh green beans, and artisan bread blew everyone away. We caught up with general manager LaMonte King to find out more about the restaurant’s classic cuisine and community-minded spirit.
Tell us about the Chesapeake.
What makes the Chesapeake unique and successful is how approachable we are. We strive to be a very welcoming restaurant that accepts everyone.
Why did you choose to open in Station North and what do you love about the area?
One of the major reasons the Chesapeake is located in Station North is this was the location of the original Chesapeake restaurant. The Chesapeake has become a major icon in the neighborhood, and is well-known among locals as a place to meet for a good conversation and a fine meal. It is a bonus to be located in an area so rich in history.
What compelled you to provide so much delicious food as a sponsor of the Neighborhood Institute this year?
We decided that this would be an excellent way to get our name out in the community and bring in additional business. We also strongly identify with the work GHCC is doing in the community. The event proved to be the perfect marketing opportunity for us, and we consider it a major win!
What are some of your specialties?
This is a very difficult question to answer! We specialize in Mid-Atlantic cuisine, and prefer to order our food from local farmers (New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, Pennsylvania). We have many incredible dishes but the favorites are Shrimp & Grits, the NY Strip Steak and oysters from the raw bar. You cannot go wrong!
What is one piece of advice you would share with aspiring entrepreneurs in Baltimore?
The main piece of advice I would give is to “Do what you Love, and Love what you Do.” This will guarantee your success.
