Margaret Brent Program Coordinator Campaign is Huge Success!

September 14, 2011

GHCC is pleased to announce that our Margaret Brent Program Coordinator Campaign was a huge success! Thanks to the support of individuals like you, Margaret Brent Elementary/Middle School will hire a part-time Program Coordinator to manage its after school programming.

As a Title I school, Margaret Brent is not able to provide a music teacher, foreign language teacher, or full-time librarian. In spite of these setbacks, the school has found innovative ways to provide its students (97% of whom qualify for the Free or Reduced Meal Plan) with exciting and enriching after school programs.

Serving over 50% of the student population five days a week, Margaret Brent’s after school programs include African Drumming, Capoeira and Nonviolence, Ceramics, Basketball, French, Ballet, Orchestra, and Writing Club. Each one is led for free by community members, students, and graduates from local colleges and universities.

While these programs are run for free, managing them is no easy task. In order to keep them running and to ensure that they are of the highest quality, Margaret Brent needed someone to manage ALL of the pieces.

Our goal for this campaign was to raise $8,000 before August 31, 2011 in order to qualify for a $10,000 matching grant from the Goldseker Foundation. Luckily, we exceeded that goal with support from numerous individuals, partners, and foundations, including a contribution of $9,000 from the office of the president and School of Education at the Johns Hopkins University and a $5,000 gift from the Garner Foundation, Inc.

Now, with enough funding in hand, Margaret Brent will begin their search for a qualified candidate who lives in the community and is invested in the school’s vision. Stay tuned for updates and again, thank you for your support!
