What we’ve been calling the “former Barclay Rec Center” for more than a year now has an official name! After collecting suggestions from neighborhood residents at the Center’s grand opening in May, GHCC staff and volunteers unveiled the new title at a community engagement night on July 16. Drum roll, please…it’s The 29th Street Community Center!
More than 35 families joined us on Tuesday to celebrate the unveiling and contribute suggestions for future programming. We asked them to think big and dream long-term. Ideas included book clubs for all ages, an art gallery, Zumba classes, nutrition classes, and an annual community career fair.
While summer programs are still in full swing, we’re already planning the fall schedule. In the meantime, come check out our new mural at the main entrance. Painted by students in the Mural Club, we will host a raffle next week to choose three kids whose portraits will be added to the wall. They are so excited!
As of right now, there are more than 165 children and adults enrolled in academic and cultural enrichment programs, art classes, creative writing classes, dance camp, and basketball camp. We’ve even started running what’s become a very popular Open Gym program, twice a week on Wednesdays (16 and under) and Thursdays (16 and over). Every program that is currently running has received a tremendous amount of praise from those involved.
