The CJR New Playground Fund
On Sunday, August 13th, exactly 15 days before our first day of school, the playground at The Commodore John Rodgers Elementary/Middle School was burned down and destroyed. As many members of our community know, the playground was a pivotal piece of our school. In addition to providing our students with a safe place to play before, during, and after school, it was also a safe place for our neighborhood’s children to go on weekends and during the summer. The loss has been devastating, especially for our youngest kids. Please click here for a FOX45 story on the fire.
We are launching an online campaign to raise the funds necessary for a bigger and better playground to replace our loss. We are hoping to build a custom playground for our students that will be accessible to all our students, equipped with a variety of engaging equipment to meet their needs. However, despite insurance covering a portion of the cost, we will still need to raise $150,000 to build Commodore’s new playground.
We have been without a playground for four months. While investigations have taken place and insurance adjusters have been out to assess the damage, our students have not had the opportunity to simply be kids and get fresh air between learning activities throughout the day. Many of our best memories from elementary school consist of things like going down a slide, talking on the swings, or climbing on monkey bars. Right now, our students do not have the opportunity to make those memories. Our goal is to get them a playground they deserve as soon as possible.
